I am writing this from the middle of packing chaos. School holiday bags, sunscreen decisions, and a very deliberate pile of things I refuse to travel without.
We are heading to a little island in Vanuatu. A raw luxury retreat, with our own private beach to snorkel out from and no WiFi in the rooms. No notifications. No EMF hum of city life. Just ocean, sunshine, fresh food, and time with my children.
And yes, my detox rituals are coming with me.
Not because I am trying to undo a holiday before it begins. Not because I cannot let go. But because supporting my body whilst I travel is one of the most loving things I can do for it, and I have learnt that it does not need to be complicated or extreme to make a real difference.
Here is how I think about it.
The toxin load of travel is real
Most of us do not think about what our body is actually navigating when we travel. Recycled cabin air on long haul flights. The chemical load of hotel rooms, from synthetic fragrances to cleaning products. Disrupted sleep. Dehydration. A complete change in food, environment and routine.
None of it is catastrophic. But it all adds up.
The aim is not to be anxious about or overthink any of it. The aim is to go in prepared, support your body's natural elimination processes as you go, and come home feeling like you actually had a holiday rather than needing to recover from one.
What I am taking with me
The 5 Day Detox Kit
This is non-negotiable. The 5 Day Detox Kit comes with me everywhere now. I will be using the detox foot patches each night before bed. Your body does its most significant detoxification work overnight, and supporting that process whilst your liver and lymphatic system are processing the load of travel just makes sense.Â
Each morning I will start with the Morning Sunshine Detox Tea. It is a gentle, grounding ritual that sets the tone for the day before the children are up and the noise begins. Dandelion root, burdock root, ginger and green tea. It is warming, it is purposeful, and it travels beautifully.
The Copper Tongue Scraper
If you are not tongue scraping whilst you travel, please let this be your sign to start now. Overnight, your body is eliminating. The tongue is one of the first places that shows up. Taking thirty seconds each morning with the Copper Tongue Scraper before you drink or eat anything is one of the simplest, most effective daily detox rituals there is. I have done it for years and never skip it - even on holiday.
The natural bag
My St Agnes Woven Tote is coming. Perfect for carrying everything I need from room to beach without reaching for plastic or synthetic materials. These small choices matter to me, and this one has become a favourite.
Natural skincare from home
I make my own face oil. Jojoba and castor oil as a base, frankincense for its skin-supporting properties, and a few drops of lemongrass essential oil for that extra tropical feeling. It doubles as a treatment and a ritual. The scent alone feels like a holiday.
I am also decanting a small amount of rosemary oil into a glass bottle to massage into my scalp and hair after salty beach days. Rosemary has long been used to support circulation in the scalp and add shine, and there is something deeply satisfying about giving your hair its own holiday ritual. A small glass bottle, a few minutes of massage, and your hair thanks you for it.
I am also packing my all-natural sunscreen, an natural bug spray that I have used for nearly ten years call Tribal (made right here in Brisbane), and a natural aloe gel for anyone who happens to catch some extra sun on sensitive skin. No synthetic fragrance, no endocrine disruptors, no unnecessary chemical load on top of what the body is already managing in the heat.
I don’t plan to wear make-up. I’ll do a natural eye-brow and lash tint before I go and I’ve got a tinted lip balm (I like the Sirona lip tint from Perfect Potion). I’ll take my mineral bronzing powder for a bit of colour, but that’s it!
The dry body brush
I will not miss a morning of dry body brushing whilst we are away. It stimulates circulation, supports lymphatic movement, and sloughs off dead skin in a way that feels genuinely invigorating. Two minutes before a shower or a swim and you feel completely different. It is one of those rituals that sounds indulgent but is actually deeply functional.
After showering, I’ll then use my natural fragrance oil for a feeling of freshness. It’s a roller in a glass bottle and just makes me feel ‘ready’ for the day.Â
The red light mask
Yes, it is coming. But I will also be getting my light naturally, as much as possible. I plan to spend a few minutes each morning looking out towards the sunlight, not at a screen. It helps reset the circadian rhythm, supports natural melatonin production for better sleep, and is one of the most underrated detox tools available to all of us, completely free.
The rituals that do not need packing
Some of the most powerful things I am doing on this trip cost nothing and contribute exactly 0kg's to your baggage allowance.
We will be barefoot for most of it. Directly on the beach, on grass, on earth. Earthing, or grounding, is the practice of making direct physical contact with the ground, and there is growing research suggesting it supports the body's electrical balance and reduces inflammation. I don't need to overcomplicate it. It simply feels good, and I believe it does good.
We will be swimming in clean, pristine water every day. Moving the body. Letting the ocean do what the ocean does.
We will be eating fresh local seafood and produce. Simple, whole, unprocessed food that does not ask much of the digestive system.
We will be unplugged. Real books. No Kindles. Conversations instead of scrolling. The nervous system gets a genuine rest, and that matters for detox support more than most people realise.
And for the children on the flight, natural sugar-free lollies for their ears on take-off and landing. Even the little things matter and generally don't take too much preparation!
The bigger picture
Travel is not the enemy of wellness. It is actually one of the most powerful things you can do for it, when you approach it with intention.
You do not need to be perfect. You do not need a protocol. You just need a few small anchors that remind your body it is still being looked after, even when everything else has shifted.
That is the St Agnes Rituals view of detox, whether you are at home or on the other side of the world.
Not dramatic. Not performative. Just supportive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take detox foot patches on a plane? Yes. Detox foot patches are safe to pack in your luggage and are not subject to any travel restrictions. We recommend packing them in your checked luggage for ease, though they are fine in hand luggage too as they contain no liquids.
Is it safe to do a detox whilst travelling? Absolutely. Our 5 Day Detox Kit is specifically designed for real life, including busy periods and travel. The foot patches and herbal detox tea are gentle, natural and non-disruptive. As always, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a medical condition, check with your healthcare practitioner first.
What is earthing and does it actually support detox? Earthing, or grounding, involves making direct physical contact with the earth's surface. Bare feet on sand, grass or soil. Preliminary research suggests it may support the body's electrical balance and help reduce inflammation. It is one of the most accessible wellness practices available, and one of the most overlooked.
Can you maintain a detox routine whilst eating out every day? Yes. Supporting your body does not require controlling every meal. Choosing fresh, locally sourced, whole foods where possible, staying hydrated, and keeping your daily rituals, like morning tea, tongue scraping and dry brushing, is more than enough to support your body's natural elimination processes whilst you enjoy the experience.
